It was the dark and icy path that had killed him. Or, that's what all of the newspapers would say at least. The public would never guess that the cause of poor Mr. Goodfield's death was not just a patch of ice in the dark. His body was laying face-down in the snow on the edge of the sidewalk, legs twisted under him. To the people who found him, it would look like he'd slipped and hit his head on the frozen pavement while not watching where he was going. It was night after all, and the ice was almost invisible.
Only the people who suspected foul play would see something else. Those certain people might think that they saw someone bump into Mr. Goodfield, but they would have no proof. And they would certainly not know that the unfortunate man had been stabbed with a very thin blade at the base of his collar bone when "bumped" into.
The first person to find him was an older lady who had come back from a secret visit with another woman's husband. Her screams alerted people who lived near

Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
